2012 Portland International Auto Show – Lamborghini Gallardo Catches Fire
The Portland International Auto Show is here in Portland right now and continues until tomorrow, January 29th from 10am to 7pm. 2012 has already brought some tragedy to exotic cars, in particular, a Lamborghini Gallardo. It’s not an adrenaline thrill seeking tragedy either, in fact, it’s quite lame…
The Portland International Auto Show isn’t exactly known as a hotbed of industry activity or product reveals. Nonetheless, there is often some attractive hardware on display, including, this year, at least one privately-owned Lamborghini Gallardo. Unfortunately, that Gallardo won’t be making the show. It caught fire.
Why, you ask? How? The answer is surprisingly stupid.
Fire marshals at the show, quite reasonably, won’t let any car enter the building with more than a quarter-tank of fuel. The Gallardo attempted to enter with an undisclosed greater amount, however, and was refused. Makes good sense so far.
That’s when the story gets stupid. Instead of figuring a way to extract the fuel from the tank, taking it for a quick 50-mile spin, or just swapping it for another Gallardo, the display staff decided it’d be a good idea to just sit in the car and rev it to redline in neutral. Not so good for the car, but, in a pinch, excusable–perhaps.
The person behind the wheel soon grew tired of the limiter-popping, however, and decided to automate the process with a piece of wood lodged between the seat and the gas pedal.
Yes, a piece of wood. After sitting idle at full song for several minutes, the completely predictable, inevitable, and foreseeable occurred: it overheated and caught fire. It was immediately loaded on a truck and removed from the scene.
Chalk up another win for idiots, another loss for exotic sports cars. [Sigh].

Portland on Forbes list of America’s Best Downtowns
Portland has made the Forbes list of America’s best downtowns! This, and the recent filming of new shows in the area (Grimm, Portlandia, etc) hopefully brings in more visitors for what Portland is, and not just because of being sales tax free.
When it comes to cities, Portland, Ore., is a unique urban playground of high-end culture, green living and DIY arts scenes. But for a taste of Portland’s best, natives point to the city’s downtown area. There you’ll find independent live theater, beautiful parks, the largest independent, used bookstore in the country and some of the best doughnut shops on the Pacific Coast (not to mention a plethora of Portland’s celebrated food trucks).

Black Friday = Pepper Spray in Yo Face!

Oh the joys of Black Friday! If you like shopping, *goes into song* it’s the most, wonderful tiiiiiime, of the yearrrr! ahem. I think not! If you were in Walmart in LA and looking for an Xbox 360, you could have experienced the joy of pepper spray in yo face!!
In Los Angeles, authorities were reviewing security tapes to track down a Hispanic woman in her 30s who pepper-sprayed a crowd at a Walmart as customers swarmed for Xboxes on sale late Thursday, Los Angeles police Sergeant J. Valle said.
“They were opening a package to try to get some Xboxes from a crate and this lady pepper-sprayed a whole bunch of people in order to gain an advantage over the Xboxes,” Sgt. Valle said.
Firefighters treated and released up to 20 people injured in the incident at a Walmart in Northridge, California, authorities said. It was not known whether the woman actually purchased the Xboxes, Sgt. Valle said.
A fire department spokesman told the Los Angeles Times that 20 people were treated for injuries from the incident, many complaining of burning in their throats and skin and eye irritations.
“People started screaming, pulling and pushing each other, and then the whole area filled up with pepper spray,” Alejandra Seminario told the Times.
“I did not want to get involved. I was too scared. I just stayed in the toy aisle.”

IKEA delivery truck drags a huge boulder onto I-205 Portland

PORTLAND – A commercial semi-truck driver dragged a huge boulder from IKEA to I-205 Saturday and he didn’t even realize it was there, police said.
A landscaper alerted police after following large scrape marks all the way from the Cascade Station IKEA store to the freeway, and then spotting the truck with the boulder still under it.
“Officers believe the driver of the truck had gone the wrong way around the turn-around to make a delivery at IKEA. In the process the trailer drove over the landscaping and his rear axle picked up the boulder and began dragging it along as he drove,” said Lt. Robert King with the Portland Police Bureau. “The driver apparently did not know he was dragging a huge boulder. “
The boulder damaged the undercarriage of the truck, which eventually caused the driver to stop on the freeway.
“Thankfully, the boulder did not dislodge into another lane of traffic causing an accident,” King said. “The investigation revealed the driver may have been sleep-deprived.”
Oregon State Police performed a commercial truck inspection and logbook investigation and the results were pending.
